A Notarial Birth Certificate is an official document issued by a notary office to certify an individual’s birth facts upon their application in accordance with the law. Birth certificates are often required for visa, immigration, school registration, property purchases and other legal purposes. If it is used overseas, the Birth Certificate must be notarized and may also require either an Apostille or Legalization depending on the destination country’s requirements.
What is a China birth certificate?
There are three types of birth notarization in China, which are birth certificate notarization, birth medical certificate notarization and family relation notarization.
1. Birth Certificate Notarization
Birth Certificate Notarization refers to the activities of the notary office to prove the authenticity of the legal facts of the applicant’s birth in China according to the application of the party concerned.
2. Birth Medical Certificate Notarization
Birth Medical Certificate Notarization refers to the notarization of the “birth medical certificate” held by the party according to the application of the party.
*On January 1, 1996, China began to use the Medical Certificate of Birth. In other words, people born before 1996 do not have a medical birth certificate.
3. Family Relation Notarization
FamilyRelation Notarization is typically used to formally certify the familial relationships between two or more individuals, such as parent-child or sibling relationships.
How to apply for notarization of Birth Certificate in China?

Notarization Procedures of Birth Certificate in China
STEP 1. Take the Birth Certificate to Notary Public Offices in China.
STEP 2. Notary Public Offices issue the Notarized Certificate to confirm that the copy of the Birth Certificate matches the original.
Documents required for Birth Certificate Notarization
1.Original Birth Certificate
2.The applicant’s Chinese ID card or foreign passport with visa or long-term residence permit in China. Chinese citizens also need to provide a household registration book.
3.Applicant’s parents’ marriage certificate
4.The parents’ Chinese ID card or foreign passport with visa or long-term residence permit in China. Chinese citizens also need to provide a household registration book.
5.If a third party is helping with the application, the power of attorney is also required.
The notarized Birth Certificate will include following information:
•The name of the Applicant
•Gender
•Date of Birth
•Birthplace
•Nationality
•Parents' names
•Current valid ID number (Such as Chinese ID card, passport number, etc.)
•Copy of the Birth Certificate
•Statement indicates that your original birth certificate matches the aforementioned copy or shows your date and place of birth and the identities of your parents.

Processing Time for Notarial Birth Certificate in China
Processing time for the notarization of Birth Certificate is 4-6 workdays, excluding mailing time.
Apostille and Legalization for the Birth Certificate
For some countries, simply obtaining a notarial certificate from the notary public is not enough, and Legalization or Apostille may also be required.
China has successfully joined the Hague Convention and become a member state. The Apostille Convention came into effect in China on November 7, 2023.
•If the country you use the Birth Certificate in is in the 1961 Hague Convention, you need to provide an Apostilled document.
•If the country you will use the Birth Certificate is not in the 1961 Hague Convention, you need to provide a Legalized document.
Apostille Procedures of the Birth Certificate
Take the notarized Birth Certificate to the Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or a Foreign Affairs Offices entrusted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China for apostille.
Legalization Procedures of the Birth Certificate
STEP 1. Take the notarial Birth Certificate to Chinese Foreign Ministry for authentication.
STEP 2. Take the authenticated Birth Certificate to corresponding Embassy/Consulate in China for legalization.
